MLB Playoff Betting Lines Are All About Pitching

MLB Playoff Betting Lines odds Are All About Pitching
I used to go to this dude named Arnold to do my taxes. He had an office near Arcadia, CA, the home of Santa Anita Racetrack, but Arnold’s true love was betting on baseball, and Arnold’s only advice, from a 40-year-baseball bettor was, “MLB betting lines are determined by the pitchers.” That was it.

The Building Blocks of Elevation — Chuck Dunbar,PGA-Pebble Beach Golf Links Most golfers know how far they hit each club on a flat topography. But a challenge course architects use to protect par is elevation change. When facing an uphill or downhill shot try to approximate the elevation change by thinking of a multi-story building, where each story equates to 10 feet. To calculate the impact of elevation change subtract three yards for each “story” on downhill shots and add five yards for each “story” on uphill shots. Reading the “stories” is key to choosing the correct club. This will likely change the club in your hands.

Verlander nearly throws 3rd no-hitter for Tigers (Yahoo! Sports)

Verlander nearly throws 3rd no-hitter for Tigers (Yahoo! Sports)
DETROIT (AP) Justin Verlander came within two outs of his third no-hitter, allowing only Josh Harrison’s ninth-inning single in the Detroit Tigers’ 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. The 29-year-old Verlander, last year’s AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, nearly became the sixth major league pitcher with at least three career no-hitters. But with one out in the ninth, Harrison reached out and flicked a clean single into shallow center field. The crowd at Comerica Park, already on its feet, gave Verlander a big ovation and the right-hander quickly finished off the Pirates with a pair of groundouts. Verlander completed his one-hit gem with 12 strikeouts and two walks. ”It was just amazing,” Verlander said. ”These fans have been unbelievable in supporting me, this team, this city. It’s been really special to be a part of this for seven years now. They show support for me when it’s good, when it’s bad, and it means a lot.” Mixing a pinpoint fastball with his sweeping breaking ball, Verlander methodically set down the Pirates for seven innings – then really brought the crowd to life in the eighth. Casey McGehee struck out looking on a 98 mph fastball, then Nate McLouth went down swinging on a pitch that hit 99. Verlander reached 100 mph with his first pitch to Clint Barmes, and after getting him to chase an outside pitch for strike three, the Detroit ace walked slowly to the dugout and down the steps closest to home plate on the third-base side – while teammates used another entrance at the opposite end. ”His stuff is so good, any time he gets to the fifth or sixth inning with a no-hitter, it’s in the back of your mind,” Tigers catcher Alex Avila said. ”When he gets to the middle of the game, you think it can happen.” The crowd came to its feet between the eighth and ninth and Verlander quickly returned to the mound, having thrown only 95 pitches. Michael McKenry grounded to shortstop Jhonny Peralta on a 3-2 offering, and Verlander got ahead of Harrison before he reached for a 1-2 breaking ball and sent a soft line drive up the middle that Peralta couldn’t get to. ”It was a slider. It stayed up a little bit. Shattered his bat. Give credit for fouling off a tough couple pitches,” Avila said. Verlander (5-1) saw the ball drop in shallow center and bent backward on the mound, knowing how close he came to another taste of history. Instead, he settled for his sixth career shutout and 16th complete game. Four of the five pitchers with at least three no-hitters are in the Hall of Fame: Nolan Ryan (seven), Sandy Koufax (four), Bob Feller (three) and Cy Young (three). Larry Corcoran, an ambidextrous pitcher who won 177 games from 1880-85, is the other one. Verlander no-hit Toronto on May 7, 2011. His other no-hitter came June 12, 2007, against Milwaukee. This was his first one-hitter, although he allowed one hit in eight innings against the Los Angeles Angels last season, one of several close calls to go with the no-hitter against the Blue Jays. ”You can’t worry about what’s going to happen if the guy puts the ball in play. You’ve got to trust your defense behind you,” Verlander said. ”I trust those guys behind me and it allows me to throw strikes.” After rolling to the AL Central title in 2011 and adding Prince Fielder in the offseason, Detroit was just 18-20 entering Friday night’s game. Manager Jim Leyland said beforehand the Tigers had to expect some criticism – but it was nothing a few wins couldn’t solve. Against the Pirates, Leyland’s team gave the sellout crowd at Comerica Park a much-welcome glimpse of what Motown was hoping to see this season. Miguel Cabrera and Fielder hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the first inning off Charlie Morton (2-4). Delmon Young added a solo homer in the fourth, and Don Kelly’s run-scoring single later that inning made it 4-0. Then there was Verlander. He was holding opponents to a .186 average even before Friday’s game. The Pirates – who entered the night hitting .221 – were simply overmatched. The buzz began to build in the fourth. Neil Walker hit a hard line drive, but right at Brennan Boesch in right field. Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez then struck out. In the sixth, McKenry made decent contact but hit a grounder right at Peralta. Then Harrison sent a drive toward left-center field. Kelly – playing center because of an injury to Austin Jackson – was able to make a running catch and keep the no-hit bid going. It was Verlander’s 51st straight regular-season start of at least six innings. The sun didn’t set until around 9 p.m. on this mid-May night in Michigan, and with Verlander breezing through the Pittsburgh lineup, the sky didn’t really begin to darken until the seventh. Walker struck out looking to begin that inning – then had a few words for plate umpire CB Bucknor. McCutchen walked for Pittsburgh’s first baserunner since the first inning, but Alvarez grounded to first and Garrett Jones was caught looking at a breaking ball. ”The last few innings he definitely was (going) for it,” Avila said. ”He threw great today. His stuff was great across the board.” NOTES: Bucknor was shaken up in the first when he was hit around the collarbone by a wild pitch. … Boesch extended his hitting streak to 11 games. … Detroit’s Drew Smyly (1-0) takes the mound against Pittsburgh’s A.J. Burnett (1-2) on Saturday.

Welker: I signed $9.5 million franchise tender (Yahoo! Sports)

Welker: I signed $9.5 million franchise tender (Yahoo! Sports)
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) New England Patriots receiver Wes Welker said Tuesday he has signed the $9.5 million tender offer that came along with being designated the team’s franchise player. Welker made the announcement on Twitter. He said he loves the game and his teammates and ”hopefully doing the right thing gets the right results.” Welker caught more passes than anyone else in the NFL last season but couldn’t come down with the one that might have clinched a Super Bowl victory against the New York Giants. A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Welker led the NFL with 122 receptions and was second in the league with 1,569 yards receiving. Welker, 30, is only the second receiver to catch at least 120 passes in two different seasons. The team had nothing to announce on Tuesday.

Pettitte to start Sunday for Yankees vs Seattle (Yahoo! Sports)

Pettitte to start Sunday for Yankees vs Seattle (Yahoo! Sports)
NEW YORK (AP) Andy Pettitte is set to rejoin the New York Yankees and start this Sunday at home against the Seattle Mariners. ”Everybody’s in agreement he’s not going to benefit from any more time below,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday. Pettitte retired after the 2010 season and sat out last year. The lefty, who turns 40 next month, returned to the team in spring training and has been pitching in the minors. Pettitte threw five shaky innings Sunday in his first Triple-A start in his comeback, allowing five runs and eight hits. He has pitched four times in the minors this year with a 3.71 ERA in 17 innings. ”I think the fans are excited. I know Andy’s really excited,” Cashman said. The plan for Pettitte to start this weekend could shift if rain hangs around, he said. ”We have weather issues all week and reserve the right to change our mind,” Cashman said. Pettitte is 240-138 lifetime, spending 13 years with the Yankees and three seasons with Houston. The Yankees have been eager for Pettitte to rejoin their rotation. They recently demoted starter Freddy Garcia to the bullpen and Phil Hughes had been struggling until a good start last weekend at Kansas City.

March Round-Up

March Round-Up
Written by Betting-RSS admin on 02 April 2012. Hello dear subscribers,  With regret I must tell you that we have the first negative month in 2012, hopefully will be one of the few like in 2011 and we can keep up the form and build up the profit. I don’t think that April will be the same as march as many important things will happen this month, one of them being Bucharest Tennis Open where I will be on court and where old subscribers know that we made lots of profit in past 2 years.  The statistics are the following: March 201237 WON / 3 VOID / 48 LOST Staked 321.5 / Returned 297.66 Yield -7,41% / ROI 92.58 Total P/L -23,84 It has been a hectic month. Bad start and at the end had to go to London. Without the trip maybe things could have looked a little bit better. Everyone that had a bad month from the start of his calendaristic month will receive a free month of course.  The stats on the website weren’t updated and I didn’t have time to post anything. In April things will go back to normal. For 21-29 of April a chat will be enabled only for the users as I will be on court at Bucharest Nastase Tiriac ATP Trophy and will send live informations about the games. So, I advice any new subscriber or old to have prepared an account with Betfair for this event.  May we all have good luck and a good month!

Tanier’s Team Reports: The Indianapolis Colts, via ‘Jim Irsay’

Tanier’s Team Reports: The Indianapolis Colts, via ‘Jim Irsay’
Jim Irsay is waiting for the sun. (Getty Images) Any website can post “offseason grades” for NFL teams, mixing the draft and free agency into transaction soup, then straining it through the mind of some sportswriter who doesn’t know who half the players are. Only the Shutdown 50 has the resources to get actual players, coaches, and executives from each team to evaluate their own offseasons! That’s right: over the next few weeks, you will get transaction evaluations straight from the horse’s mouths: straight talk about who was signed, who was lost, who was drafted, and why. (For the satirically challenged: all player, coach, and executive remarks are made by an impersonator). To kick off the series, Colts owner Jim Irsay (a must-follow on Twitter, by the way), breaks down his team’s offseason. Take it away, Mr. Irsay: JIM IRSAY: Incense and peppermints, meaningless nouns.Turn on, tune in, turn your eyes around. Dudes! I didn’t see you there. I was just rockin’ out with some tunage. So, you have come to my mushroom mountain seeking wisdom. Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream. It is not dying. Last year was dying. Curtis Painter … ugh. Like, the Peyton Manning era was an everlasting summer, but you could see it fading fast. So I gave Peyton his freedom. Though are any of us really free? I am! I can sit around in a bathrobe strumming George Harrison’s old guitar while wearing a Super Bowl ring. That’s freedom. Anyway, Andrew Luck is from Stanford, which is not quite as groovy as being from Berkeley, but the kid is so smart that he will blow your mind. He’s going to have two good rookie tight ends to throw to in Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen. And we kept Reggie Wayne because, like, Wayne is the only guy who knows where I parked half the time. We are also changing to a 3-4 defense, which means Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis will have to move to linebacker. Now I know what you are thinking: two tight ends? A 3-4 defense? Have I become a sellout? Am I just following trends instead of letting my freak flag fly? Have I joined the establishment? No way, man: this is about going with the flow, and being flexible. Be the willow, and not the oak. Read the Tao. Expand your mind. Chuck Pagano, our new coach, has brought a lot of 3-4 defenders with him from Baltimore. We signed defensive end Cory Redding, safety Tom Zbikowski, and linebacker Brandon McKinney from the Ravens. At first, I was worried about the karma: if the Colts take too much more away from the city of Baltimore, it could upset our chakras. I spent two days in my sweat lodge listening to “Piper at the Gates of Dawn” until my spirit wombat appeared and told me that the past was the past, that I had to let go and leave in the present, man. I love that wombat. So, like, this is a rebuilding year. It’s a grass roots movement. We’re gonna drop out of sight for a while, get our heads together, and then look out! The revolution is gonna be out of sight, man. Now if I can just get this Luck kid to let his hair down a little.

US government investigating NBA players’ union (Yahoo! Sports)

US government investigating NBA players’ union (Yahoo! Sports)
NEW YORK (AP) The federal government is investigating the business practices of the NBA players’ association. The union confirmed Friday it has received a subpoena for documents from the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan and says it will cooperate with the investigation. The NBPA also says in a statement that it has appointed a special committee to oversee an internal inquiry, including a financial audit. Recent reports have questioned the NBPA’s finances and spending practices, largely having to do with the hiring of family members and firms that employ relatives of executive director Billy Hunter. Hunter says he will cooperate with the internal inquiry, but will not be in involved in the effort so it remains independent. The NBPA says in the statement it looks forward to putting the matters to rest.

Liberty’s McCarville to sit out WNBA season again (The Associated Press)

Liberty’s McCarville to sit out WNBA season again (The Associated Press)
NEW YORK (AP) The New York Liberty will be without Janel McCarville again this season, as the veteran center has announced she will sit out for the second straight year. McCarville was placed on the suspended list last season after she failed to report to training camp. New York retained her rights, and Liberty coach and general manager John Whisenant visited her this winter in Italy, where she is playing for Familia Schio. However, she decided to rest this summer as well. ”While I love the Liberty and the WNBA, I’ve decided to sit out the 2012 season to spend more time with my family,” McCarville said in a statement released by the team Monday. ”I sincerely appreciated and enjoyed the time that Coach Whiz spent with me in Italy earlier this year, and it has been great to hear from so many Liberty fans encouraging my return. I wish the team nothing but the best in its quest for a WNBA championship.” McCarville averaged 8.8 points and a career-high 5.9 rebounds in 2010. She has career averages of 8.7 points and 4.7 boards in 187 games for Charlotte and New York. The Liberty continue to retain her WNBA rights.

Duncan scores 19 to lead Spurs past Hornets (Yahoo! Sports)

Duncan scores 19 to lead Spurs past Hornets (Yahoo! Sports)
SAN ANTONIO (AP)—Tim Duncan scored 19 points to lead San Antonio to a 128-103 victory over the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night, giving the Spurs their 10th straight win and moving them atop the Western Conference standings. Manu Ginobili and Patty Mills scored 14 points each and Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal added 13 apiece to help the Spurs sweep the four-game season series against New Orleans. Eric Gordon, playing in only his second game in three months, scored 31 points to lead the Hornets, who have lost four of their last five games. Marco Belinelli had 15 points, Carl Landry scored 13, and Greivis Vasquez added 12. The win, coupled with Oklahoma City’s loss to Indiana, moved the Spurs percentage points ahead of the Thunder for first place in the West. A loss by Houston later Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers would clinch San Antonio’s 15th consecutive playoff berth. The last time the Spurs didn’t make the playoffs was in 1996-97, the season before Duncan arrived. San Antonio jumped out to a 72-45 halftime lead and was never threatened the second half. The easy win gave the Spurs their second streak of at least 10 victories— they won 11 straight earlier this season—and also allowed coach Gregg Popovich to rest his stars. Popovich has carefully managed minutes all season in anticipation of the playoffs, something easier to do now with a bench strengthened by the additions of Mills, Jackson and Boris Diaw. Against the Hornets, Duncan played only 20 minutes, Ginobili had 21 and Tony Parker played 16. The Hornets were without point guard Jarrett Jack for the second straight game. Jack, who has a right foot sprain, averages 15.6 points and 6.3 assists per game. Against the Spurs, Jack had been particularly effective, averaging 26.5 points and 7 assists in two games. “I think it’s one of those things that may take some time to heal,” coach Monty Williams said before the game. Vasquez started in Jack’s place but had only four points in the first half. Ginobili scored 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting in the first half to help San Antonio take its big lead. The Spurs outscored the Hornets 38-21 in the second quarter to essentially put the game away. As effective as the Spurs starters were—Duncan shot 8 for 9—the reserves were even more impressive as they totaled 82 points, led by Ginobili. NOTES: The Spurs shot a season-high 51 for 84 and had 31 assists. New Orleans had 11 assists. … Twelve of the Spurs’ 13 active players saw action in the first half. Matt Bonner didn’t score and James Anderson didn’t play until late in the fourth quarter. … The Spurs have had at least a 10-game winning streak during each of the past two seasons. They won 11 straight last year.
