MLB Playoff Betting Lines Are All About Pitching

MLB Playoff Betting Lines odds Are All About Pitching
I used to go to this dude named Arnold to do my taxes. He had an office near Arcadia, CA, the home of Santa Anita Racetrack, but Arnold’s true love was betting on baseball, and Arnold’s only advice, from a 40-year-baseball bettor was, “MLB betting lines are determined by the pitchers.” That was it.

Loeb keeps lead on 4th day of Monte Carlo Rally (PA SportsTicker)
MONACO (AP) —Sebastien Loeb kept his lead on the fourth day of the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally and Petter Solberg closed the gap on Daniel Sordo in the fight for second place on Saturday. Although Loeb failed to win a stage for the second straight day, the Frenchman leads Sordo overall by 2 minutes, 41.6 seconds. Loeb took few risks in his Citroen and only needs a conservative run in the short final state Sunday to win.

Boozer has 31, Rose-less Bulls rout Suns (AP)

Boozer has 31, Rose-less Bulls rout Suns (AP)
CHICAGO (AP)—Carlos Boozer scored 26 of his season-high 31 points in the first half, leading the short-handed Chicago Bulls to a 118-97 win over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. Boozer hit 12 of 15 shots in the opening half and scored eight points during a 12-point burst that opened up a 20-point lead for Chicago, which was playing without Derrick Rose for the second straight game because of a sprained left big toe. The Bulls improved to 6-0 at home for the first time since 1996-97, though they allowed more than 74 points to an opponent for the first time at home this season. Chicago has won its home games by an average margin of 19 points this season. Steve Nash led Phoenix with 25 points and nine assists, but the Suns allowed a fourth straight opponent to top 100 points and lost their fifth game in a row. C.J. Watson scored a season-high 23 points, Luol Deng added 15 and Joakim Noah had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Chicago as all five starters scored in double figures. The Bulls didn’t miss Rose while posting a season-high in points and totaling 31 assists while committing just six turnovers. Chicago pushed the ball down the floor quickly all night despite the absence of the reigning league MVP, outscoring Phoenix 13-11 in transition and getting a number of open looks on the secondary break. Boozer scored 14 points in the second quarter as the Bulls took a 67-47 lead into the break, a lofty total for a team that averaged 85.4 points in its first five home games. It was the most points the Bulls have scored in a half this season. Chicago scored the first seven points of the second half, six by Noah, and led by as many as 28 points while cruising to the easy win. Watson quickly took advantage of his first start of the season, scoring 13 points in the opening period. Boozer added 12 as Chicago shot 72 percent the period, taking a 39-31 lead and posting a season-high for points in a quarter. Nash kept Phoenix close early with 13 points and six assists in the first quarter and the Suns shot 65 percent in the period. Marcin Gortat had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Suns. NOTES: Watson was playing just his second game after missing nine because of a left elbow sprain. … Richard Hamilton started for the first time since Jan. 4 and scored 11 points after missing the Bulls’ previous eight games because of a sore left groin. He missed 10 of Chicago’s last 11 games because of the injury. … Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was celebrating his 54th birthday. When asked before the game what he wanted, he simply said, “A win.” … The Bulls have played 16 games in the first 24 days of the compressed NBA season, more than any other team in the league. They have the next two days off. . The Bulls took a 63-62 lead in the all-time series against Phoenix, which started in 1968-69. Tuesday’s game was the only meeting between the clubs this season.

Packers’ big names lead the list of early inactives

Packers’ big names lead the list of early inactives
Welcome to the NFL’s Silly Season! It’s Week 17, and as such, teams that already have everything wrapped up (like the Green Bay Packers, who can end up with the NFC’s one-seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs as a worst-case scenario) are resting most or all of their key marquee starters. We’ll be laughing heartily if Tony Dungy criticizes this move on Football Night in America. Here are all the early inactives; we can only hope that your fantasy league wrapped things up last week. Bears place Cutler, Forte on IR (AP)

Bears place Cutler, Forte on IR (AP)
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP)—The Chicago Bears have placed quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte on injured reserve, meaning they will miss the season finale at Minnesota this week. The moves on Tuesday were hardly surprising given Chicago’s recent struggles. The Bears (7-8) have lost five straight since Cutler broke his right thumb late in a win over San Diego on Nov. 20, and things took another bad turn two weeks later when Forte sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee against Kansas City. Cutler, who was scheduled to have surgically inserted pins removed Tuesday, threw for 2,319 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Forte finished with 997 yards rushing and 490 receiving. The Bears elevated defensive tackle Jordan Miller from the practice squad and signed guard Mansfield Wrotto. Cutler’s injury sent Chicago into a tailspin, knocking out of contention a team that appeared on its way to the playoffs after last year’s run to the NFC title game. The Bears were mathematically eliminated with a loss at Green Bay on Sunday, but they probably weren’t going to make it by the time they arrived at Lambeau Field. One reason for that was the lack of a reliable backup quarterback. Chicago put in a waiver claim on Kyle Orton after Cutler went down, but Kansas City had priority and got him. The Bears wound up signing Josh McCown, who was coaching quarterbacks at a North Carolina high school, and passed on going after Donovan McNabb after Minnesota let him go. Meanwhile, backup Caleb Hanie struggled in a big way and went 0-4 as the starter. McCown got the nod against the Packers and performed better, throwing for 242 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in his first NFL appearance since 2009, but the Bears saw their playoff hopes vanish in a 35-21 loss. A healthy Forte might have made a difference, but his season ended when he took a hit to the knee against Kansas City. It didn’t help that backup Marion Barber committed costly mistakes in losses to the Chiefs and Denver the following week. He had a touchdown catch in a 10-3 loss to Kansas City called off because he lined up illegally, forcing Chicago to settle for a field goal, and things only got worse for him the following week. Barber got pushed out of bounds on a run near the end of regulation, helping give Denver enough time to tie the game. In overtime, his fumble led to the winning field goal.

Venus won’t make return in New Zealand (AP)

Venus won’t make return in New Zealand (AP)
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP)—Venus Williams has pulled out of January’s ASB Classic in New Zealand where she was scheduled to play her first competitive match since August. The 31-year-old Williams is still recovering from the immune system disease Sjogren’s syndrome, which can cause fatigue and joint pain. Williams has played in several exhibition matches recently, but organizers of the Auckland tournament beginning Jan. 7 said she was not yet ready to return to competitive tennis. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion played in only four tournaments in 2011 and shut down her season after the U.S. Open. The Australian Open, the first major of the season, begins Jan. 16.

Canucks’ Luongo beats reeling Wild 4-0 (AP)

Canucks’ Luongo beats reeling Wild 4-0 (AP)
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP)—Roberto Luongo took a big step toward getting back on track. After a subpar start to the season in which he was struggled and had injuries, Luongo made 33 saves to earn his first shutout of the season, helping the Vancouver Canucks beat the Minnesota Wild 4-0 Monday night. “It takes every guy in this locker room to get a shutout, and the boys worked hard tonight to preserve it and make sure we didn’t give up much— especially in the third period there,” Luongo said. Henrik Sedin scored a goal and added two assists to extend his points streak to three games and twin brother Daniel added three assists to help the Canucks win for the 11th time in 14 games. At 20-9-5, the Wild are off to their best start in franchise history, even after their fourth straight loss. It’s not about the standings,” Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom said. “It’s the way we’re playing right now and that’s not our hockey.” In their first home contest after a four-game road trip in the Eastern time zone, the Canucks moved within three points of the Northwest Division-leading Wild. “We knew it was a huge game coming off the road trip, and we wanted to catch those guys,” Luongo said. “So it was a great team effort, and the shutout’s just a little bonus.” Luongo also shared in a shutout Dec. 9 against Colorado, when he left early with a throat injury. Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows and Jannik Hansen also scored for the Canucks. “Obviously, we came out and execution wise we might have been a little bit off,” Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. “But that’s why you’ve got a great goaltender. He kept us in and (enabled) us to find our legs and find our hands.” Despite missing five key forwards to injury, the Wild controlled most of the play in the first period while outshooting the Canucks 13-9. But Vancouver held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes and then built its lead to 3-0 after the second. Luongo was tested early as a Dany Heatley’s slid just wide of the post 10:30 into the game and Pierre-Marc Bouchard’s slap shot required a difficult save. Henrik Sedin opened the scoring on a power play at 18:52 of the first as he fired off a cross-ice pass from Daniel. “He made three unbelievable passes,” Henrik Sedin said. “That’s what I’ve said all along. He’s as good of a passer as anyone else in this league. … It was just a matter of getting open.” Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom got a puck of the puck, but it trickled through his legs. The goal came exactly a minute after Wild winger Colton Gillies was penalized for hooking. The goal came after Vancouver defenseman Alex Edler made a great play at the other end of the ice, racing back to check Matt Cullen as he rushed alone toward the Vancouver net with the puck. Kesler put the Canucks ahead 2-0 on another power play midway through the second period. He fired in Daniel Sedin’s pass from behind the net as the Swede waited patiently before sneaking a puck through a defender to Kesler on the edge of the crease. Minnesota’s Heatley was off for high-sticking after he swatted at a Bouchard point shot that Luongo had caught during a Wild power play and then clipped Burrows in the face. Burrows gave the Canucks a 3-0 advantage with just over two minutes left in the second. He put in Daniel Sedin’s pass from the side of the net, culminating a three-way passing play with the twins. Luongo preserved his shutout with just under four minutes left in the game as he stopped a Colton Gillies backhand following a giveaway deep in the Vancouver end. Moments later, Hansen closed out the scoring. The Wild lost its ninth straight in Vancouver since last winning Jan. 31, 2009. Minnesota has gone 0-7-2 at Rogers Arena since then. “I really liked the start to the game,” Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. “We were going really good doing a lot of good things and the next thing you know we took a penalty and of course they have some skill. They can capitalize when you make mistakes. We made a few of them tonight and they seemed to capitalize on every one of them.” NOTES: Canucks winger Mason Raymond left the game midway through the third period after he took teammate Kevin Bieksa’s clearing attempt in the face … Bouchard returned to the Minnesota lineup after missing two games with a broken nose. … Canucks D Aaron Rome is out three-to-four weeks with a broken thumb suffered Saturday while blocking a shot in Toronto. D Keith Ballard sat out with back spasms stemming from a flare-up of an injury that forced him to miss the last five minutes of Saturday’s game. He took part in the morning skate but the back did not loosen up sufficiently, associate coach Rick Bowness said. … RW Jed Ortmeyer played for Minnesota a day after being called up from Houston of the AHL.

Vikings RB Peterson probable vs. Saints (AP)

Vikings RB Peterson probable vs. Saints (AP)
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—Adrian Peterson says he plans to play on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The Minnesota Vikings star running back practiced on a limited basis Thursday. But he says his sprained left ankle is feeling much better and he expects to play for the first time in a month. Peterson has missed the last three games with the high ankle sprain. Peterson says he feels about 85 percent healthy right now, but he is determined to rejoin his teammates and help them to an elusive victory. The Vikings are 2-11 and need two wins in their last three games to avoid the worst record in franchise history. Peterson joked that he has been getting pressured by fans on Twitter who want him back to help their fantasy football teams.

NBA won’t approve Paul trade to Lakers (AP)

NBA won’t approve Paul trade to Lakers (AP)
NEW ORLEANS (AP)—The NBA, owners of the New Orleans Hornets, refused Thursday to approve a three-team trade that would have sent Hornets All-Star guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers. “It’s not true that the owners killed the deal, the deal was never discussed at the Board of Governors meeting and the league office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons,” league spokesman Mike Bass said. Yahoo Sports reported that NBA Commissioner David Stern killed the trade after several owners complained. Citing anonymous sources, Yahoo reported Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was one of the most vocal owners upset about the deal, done the same day as the end of the lockout, which was supposed to restore competitive balance in the league. Owners and players ratified a new collective bargaining agreement Thursday, the final step to ending the five-month lockout and paving the way for training camps and free agency to open Friday. There was hope in small markets like New Orleans that after the lockout it would be easier for teams to hold on to their biggest stars. Had the deal had been approved, one of the NBA’s biggest stars from the league-owned small-market Hornets would have moved to one of the NBA’s largest, richest markets. The Hornets have been owned by the NBA since last December, when the league bought the club from founder George Shinn. A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that the framework for a deal had been in place earlier Thursday, but that Paul would report to Hornets training camp Friday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the talks were supposed to remain confidential. The proposed deal would have sent Lamar Odom from the Lakers to New Orleans and Pau Gasol from the Lakers to Houston. The Rockets also had agreed to send forward Louis Scola, shooting guard Kevin Martin, point guard Goran Dragic and a first-round draft choice to New Orleans. If the Hornets are unable to figure out a trade for Paul, he would be able to opt out of his current contract after the upcoming season. Speaking earlier Thursday, Hornets president Hugh Weber said the franchise has been preparing for months for the possibility that Paul would resist signing an extension in New Orleans, a move that would leave the Hornets with the choice of trading him or simply letting him walk in free agency at the end of the season. “We’ve been preparing for this moment for over a year, and it’s not like we were surprised or caught flat-footed,” Weber said. “This is not a surprise. This is not something where we’ve been sitting around waiting to see what would happen. We’ve been managing this and taking control of the situation as best we can and we’re going to have a team that we believe achieves that objective of making this community proud.” Paul, 26, averaged 15.8 points and 9.8 assists last season. Despite the lockout and uncertainty over Paul’s future, fan support has been building in New Orleans, where the team has advertised their season-ticket drive as an effort to lure a permanent local buyer who is committed to keeping the team in Louisiana. The Hornets have increased their season ticket base from a little more than 6,000 last season to 10,019 as of Thursday afternoon. Paul was drafted by the Hornets fourth overall out of Wake Forest in 2005. He has been selected to the Western Conference All-Star squad the past four seasons and also was a member of the United States’ Olympic gold medal-winning team in Beijing in 2008.
