MLB Playoff Betting Lines Are All About Pitching

MLB Playoff Betting Lines odds Are All About Pitching
I used to go to this dude named Arnold to do my taxes. He had an office near Arcadia, CA, the home of Santa Anita Racetrack, but Arnold’s true love was betting on baseball, and Arnold’s only advice, from a 40-year-baseball bettor was, “MLB betting lines are determined by the pitchers.” That was it.

OF Ramirez expected at A’s camp Friday (AP)

OF Ramirez expected at A’s camp Friday (AP)
PHOENIX (AP)—The Oakland Athletics still have strong interest in signing slugger Manny Ramirez, who presents a low-risk investment for the rebuilding franchise. If things come together, the 39-year-old would sign a deal for slightly more than the league minimum of $480,000. He first must serve a 50-game suspension without pay for violating baseball’s drug policy for the second time. With no rainouts, the first game Ramirez would be eligible to play is June 2 at Kansas City. The sides could reach agreement as soon as the next few days or sometime next week, and Ramirez then likely would travel from Florida to Arizona to undergo a physical before joining Oakland’s spring training camp for full-squad workouts starting Feb. 25. Pitchers and catchers report to camp Saturday. Oakland recently sent representatives to Florida to observe workouts by Ramirez, who retired from the Tampa Bay Rays last season rather than serve a 100-game suspension. For Ramirez, this could become a chance to help repair his reputation and serve as a positive clubhouse influence on a young team—that’s sure what the Oakland brass hope, anyway. The A’s last week agreed to terms on a $36 million, four-year contract with highly sought after outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, a Cuban defector who has expressed interest in playing with Ramirez. At baseball’s winter meetings in December, it was announced that Ramirez had applied for reinstatement. He had his suspension for a second failed drug test cut to 50 because he sat out nearly all of last season. MLB had announced his retirement on April 8, saying he was notified “of an issue” under the drug program. Ramirez, who will be 40 on May 30, ranks 14th on the career list with 555 home runs. He went 1 for 17 (.059) in five games last season for Tampa Bay, which had signed him to a one-year deal worth $2.02 million. This would be the 20th major league season for Ramirez, a career .312 hitter with 1,831 RBIs. Oakland, which traded away its top three pitchers this offseason including two starters, sure could use a power bat in the middle of the order in a tough AL West that already has seen the key additions of Albert Pujols on the Los Angeles Angels and star Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish for the two-time reigning AL champion Texas Rangers. The A’s haven’t reached the playoffs or had a winning season since being swept by the Tigers in the 2006 AL championship series.

Clips rally from 18 down, top Blazers (AP)

Clips rally from 18 down, top Blazers (AP)
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Blake Griffin had 21 points and 14 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Clippers rally from an 18-point second-half deficit and beat the Portland Trail Blazers 74-71 on Thursday night. Chris Paul, scoreless through three quarters, finished with 13 points as the Clippers outscored the Trail Blazers 22-11 during the fourth quarter. The win was Los Angeles’ first in Portland since Dec. 12, 2008. Both teams were held to season lows for points. Mo Williams added 15 points for Los Angeles. Nicolas Batum and Jamal Crawford each scored 19 points for Portland, which was playing its second straight game without All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who sprained his left ankle in Tuesday’s game against Washington. Portland’s defense stumped the Clippers for most of the first half. Los Angeles made just 15 of 45 shots, and of its 15 field goals, seven were putbacks of offensive rebounds. Batum got Portland rolling, scoring 15 points during the first quarter to stake the Blazers to a 27-20 lead. Early in the second, Crawford hit a 3-pointer as Portland scored eight unanswered points to build the lead to 15 points. The struggling Clippers were able to pull to within 43-32 by halftime. Portland went on a scoring spurt by scoring the first seven points of the second half to take a 50-32 lead. But the Blazers’ offense suddenly went cold, and Los Angeles slowly began its huge rally. Portland made two field goals during a 9-minute stretch, and the Clippers shaved the deficit to 64-62 on Paul’s layup with 6:56 remaining. Three minutes later, Williams’ 3-pointer gave Los Angeles the lead at 67-66. Paul hit a 3, then followed with a 16-footer with 1:05 left to put the Clippers ahead 72-67. Portland had chance to tie, but Wesley Matthews’ wild 3-point shot missed at the buzzer. Notes: Blazers owner Paul Allen issued a statement regarding news of a proposal of a new arena in Seattle and the possible return of the NBA to that city, saying: “It’s exciting to think about the NBA coming back to Seattle and renewing the rivalry with the Portland Trail Blazers. However, it is too early for me to comment further without a specific plan or proposal to review.” … Los Angeles’ 32 first-half points were a season low. The previous mark was 36 against San Antonio. … The Clippers missed their first 11 shots from 3-point range.

Light, Vollmer, Mayo slowed by illnesses (AP)
INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Three players on the New England Patriots are dealing with illnesses just a few days before the Super Bowl. Left tackle Matt Light and right tackle Sebastian Vollmer skipped Tuesday’s media day with illnesses, coach Bill Belichick said. Linebacker Jerod Mayo attended but said he has a cold. Light, a rookie on the Patriots’ first Super Bowl championship team in the 2001 season, also missed a media session Monday and was replaced by center Dan Connolly. Vollmer has been sidelined the last seven games because of foot and back injuries, but Belichick has said there’s a chance he’ll play on Sunday against the New York Giants.

Boozer has 31, Rose-less Bulls rout Suns (AP)

Boozer has 31, Rose-less Bulls rout Suns (AP)
CHICAGO (AP)—Carlos Boozer scored 26 of his season-high 31 points in the first half, leading the short-handed Chicago Bulls to a 118-97 win over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night. Boozer hit 12 of 15 shots in the opening half and scored eight points during a 12-point burst that opened up a 20-point lead for Chicago, which was playing without Derrick Rose for the second straight game because of a sprained left big toe. The Bulls improved to 6-0 at home for the first time since 1996-97, though they allowed more than 74 points to an opponent for the first time at home this season. Chicago has won its home games by an average margin of 19 points this season. Steve Nash led Phoenix with 25 points and nine assists, but the Suns allowed a fourth straight opponent to top 100 points and lost their fifth game in a row. C.J. Watson scored a season-high 23 points, Luol Deng added 15 and Joakim Noah had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Chicago as all five starters scored in double figures. The Bulls didn’t miss Rose while posting a season-high in points and totaling 31 assists while committing just six turnovers. Chicago pushed the ball down the floor quickly all night despite the absence of the reigning league MVP, outscoring Phoenix 13-11 in transition and getting a number of open looks on the secondary break. Boozer scored 14 points in the second quarter as the Bulls took a 67-47 lead into the break, a lofty total for a team that averaged 85.4 points in its first five home games. It was the most points the Bulls have scored in a half this season. Chicago scored the first seven points of the second half, six by Noah, and led by as many as 28 points while cruising to the easy win. Watson quickly took advantage of his first start of the season, scoring 13 points in the opening period. Boozer added 12 as Chicago shot 72 percent the period, taking a 39-31 lead and posting a season-high for points in a quarter. Nash kept Phoenix close early with 13 points and six assists in the first quarter and the Suns shot 65 percent in the period. Marcin Gortat had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Suns. NOTES: Watson was playing just his second game after missing nine because of a left elbow sprain. … Richard Hamilton started for the first time since Jan. 4 and scored 11 points after missing the Bulls’ previous eight games because of a sore left groin. He missed 10 of Chicago’s last 11 games because of the injury. … Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was celebrating his 54th birthday. When asked before the game what he wanted, he simply said, “A win.” … The Bulls have played 16 games in the first 24 days of the compressed NBA season, more than any other team in the league. They have the next two days off. . The Bulls took a 63-62 lead in the all-time series against Phoenix, which started in 1968-69. Tuesday’s game was the only meeting between the clubs this season.

Packers’ big names lead the list of early inactives

Packers’ big names lead the list of early inactives
Welcome to the NFL’s Silly Season! It’s Week 17, and as such, teams that already have everything wrapped up (like the Green Bay Packers, who can end up with the NFC’s one-seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs as a worst-case scenario) are resting most or all of their key marquee starters. We’ll be laughing heartily if Tony Dungy criticizes this move on Football Night in America. Here are all the early inactives; we can only hope that your fantasy league wrapped things up last week.
